
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team has been a member of the Big Ten Conference since 2014. Rutgers has been bowl eligible nine times since 2005. Former Rutgers Head Coach Greg Schiano started the Rutgers renaissance and then Kyle Flood became the head coach after Schiano left for the NFL. The two coaches combined to have a record of 6-3 in post season play. From 2005-2015 Rutgers has won 83 football games. The Scarlet Knights will have a new look this year led by 1st year Head Coach Chris Ash. Coach Ash comes over from Ohio State, where he served as a defensive coordinator under legendary coach Urban Meyer. Ash won a National Championship at Ohio State in 2014 and signed a 5 year deal with the Scarlet Knights program on December 7th, 2015.
Rutgers has a rich football tradition and is considered the birthplace of college football. It all started back in 1869 when Rutgers defeated Princeton in a low scoring affair by a final score of 6-4. This game was the first intercollegiate football contest. Rutgers University, who now plays its home games at High Point Solutions Stadium. The biggest moments in Rutgers history was in 2006 when #15 Rutgers defeated #3 Louisville 28-25. Jeremy Ito connected on a 28-yard field goal to give the Scarlet Knights the lead with :13 seconds left. When the game ended Chris Carlin described it on the radio as “Pandemonium in Piscataway.” The program has over 600 wins and features games this year vs Penn State, Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan.
